Tóm tắt

Hiroe Tsujima?

The story begins with a scene at the emergency rooms, in the point of view of a certain man that just been rolled into the hospital. He can feel his memory and thought being jumbled up, his right arm and legs feel weirdly weighless. His irritation become worst at the smell of bloods and medicine, and burst into intense pain when he heard something about “the female and child patients is beyond saving, focused on the male patient”. And then he can feel metal inside of his body, medicine being injected, and his conciousness fading away due to blood loss and the necrotic injected. However, he clearly heard what the surgeon told him as his consciousness fade: “Your wife and child is lost, but please, try your best and stay with us mr Brian”. It made him remember of how he embrace his loved one, and how a traffic accident led to this scenario. The information completely shooked and broke him, made him struggle intensely on the surgery bed in pure excruciating agony of the mind and the body, yet was quickly pacify by the surgeon stronger injection of medicine.

The scene and point of view now shift to Hubert, a man who just hurried to the hospital. He found himself in an extremely difficult situation, as he remembered why he had to go to this hospital at this time of the day, which was office hours. Not too long ago, Hubert got his sack from the company he has worked for over 10 years. At the same time, it was also decided that he was the one to be assigned to take care of the now hospitalized brother of his, Brian. He cursed at the fact that rather than voluntary, he was forced onto taking up this duty as his other siblings and extended family members invested much money, something he will soon be lacking, to hired a lawyer to ensure Hubert was the one to take care of Brian. Yet he tried his best to brush it off by reminiscing about how Brian was such a good brother to him, always care and talk to him through the phone, even checking up on Hubert non-stop when both are now adults and has their own family to attend to.

Zain 05: Tranh Thủ
a piece of work that ponder over one of the most controversial ancient debate of Chinese philosophers: whether human are born good or bad, and how would that influence their decision-making. However, instead of leaning over any specific side, the movie highlighted the fact that in today’s modern society, there is no clean cut good or bad. The man in the movies is just one egoistical and stubborn man, yet can be observed under different light on the first half and second half of the story. This came to show that there is good and bad existing within one person, a side theme of the movie. It is also a stepping stone toward the main theme of the movies, shown by the man decisive action of rebelling against the controller: Kindness is a choice, not some thing you are naturally born with. As life and society grew more and more complicated, clouded by many biased and intricacies, it get difficult to identify what exactly is “kindness” in this day and age. In this era of advanced information technology, many thought that they are always informed, yet at the same time are clueless and detached like the man in the white room. Some believed that they are omnipotent and had others under the palms of their hands, similar to the man with the controller. Others are subjected to the total destruction of the labor born from a life of hard works and have visibly no one to blame it upon.

Chương 24: Thù cũ
The man was the first character to be introduced to the audience, clad in black, making him stand out in the white room but does not give him any better sense of identity. The fact that he was nameless from start to finish make him seems like a blank slate for the audience to self-insert themselves, prompting not just the man but them with the question that will follow: What to do when given the surreal power of being to manipulate a human being? This seem like an easy or bland ridiculous question yet the situation the man was put in and his choices suggested otherwise. He tried to resist the calling of the controller, similar to how one’s would denounce the aforementioned question as senseless. However, the result could only be described as somewhat disappointing. Despite in a somewhat different form, the man, compelled to utter destruction with his newfound power, was being manipulated himself. With the thing at the top of this hierarchy of manipulation being a supposedly lifeless object created by human themselves, this created an ironic situation that show how us humans being can be much more receptive to being controlled than we might thought we did. Subsequently, the questions of conflict given at the start now held much more weight. Some might argued that there are seemingly fantasy elements at play here that made us human seems so fragile, in terms of demoting the strength of morality in human. While it is undeniable that there are some details, per se a “haunted controller”, that have stretched the fabric of reality, saying that the movie have dwarfed the existence of humanity is missing the point. It is simply questioning the extent of human degeneration and whether salvation was possible, all centred around the man decision. The whisper of the controller only lured him into testing out it’s power. The one that wrecked more and more havoc on the object of manipulation, miss Lily, life and relationship was the man. He lost himself in the amoral joy of destruction, of playing god, like a gamer, carefree of any consequences, as to him in that moment, it was all something faraway and unrelated.

So what does it means to be a person with a horizontal self-construal? In short, it just means that you would value equality in your communication with others, yet I doubt it will be easy to imagine for all of our listeners today as we all grew up in a vertical orientated society. Even the foreign culture that we commonly come in touch with like Chinese, American, Japanese, British, French, German etc… all of which are vertical orientated culture. So to illustrate some truly horizontal orientation, I want to introduce you to two cultures groups that include mostly of people with horizontal self-construal and how they developed some unique traditions. to follow suit. First is the Isarel Kibbutz and their child rearing a. An Isarel kibbutz is basically groups of Jewisha people gatheriang together, living interdependently with each others while tryingto eliminate all possible inequality for it member, to create an almost utopia of equality of sort. Suprisingly, the arrival children was seen as a contributing factor to a kind of inequality for the parent. The childrasing assign the parent with sex roles, which was something the kibbutz wanted to abolish. So they all decided to put all the into ahome and raise them there, let the parents be free to choose to whether to be responsible for them or not. Sound quite shocking yeah? But to them, it is the equality that theyfor, their common sense. Talkingxa no of common sense, I also want to introduce you to a an interesting social modesty code call the Janteloven, also known as The Law of Jante. Followed by the Scandinavian countries, this code consist of ten rules that basically sum up to frowning upon anyone who think they are superior or special and promote humbleness. To interpret it another way, it pursade one to view everyone around you as individuals, yet all are equal to you. So tthrough the examples I just mentioned and the questions that I askedin the survey, we can derive some key points about what exactly is a person with a horizontal self-construal. They would….
